Listening to Podcasts (kinda) Pays Off

The latest issue of Harpy Hybrid features a poem of mine A Critical Path to Forty. The genesis of the poem involved listening to the above YouTube show, which only lasted through the early part of quarantine. Maybe it will the longest lasting testament to its existence, these lines uncovered from a hard drive ten centuries in the future and leading cyborg lizard scholars to speculate on the nature of this dirtbag art show.

A Return to Prose Posts

As some of you may know I am now studying for an MFA at Long Island University. Is studying the right word? I guess technically I'm a candidate. But not THE Candidate. That remains Robert Redford. Yes, the academic bug finally bit me. Who knows how far it will burrow inside. Classes have been good so far, lots of readings and such as you can imagine. I'm learning about the history of the novel and this little thing called "show don't tell." Oh damn. Did I just violate it? In one of my classes, Crossing Genres, we are exploring different forms of writing. One of our first lessons focused on flash fiction. I haven't written much of it, but since that class I've been trying out the form. It used to be easier for me to write 50,000 words than something restricted to a 1,000. Or at least to be proud of the result. Now I can say I'm making progress on this front. Or, show you with a link to one of the first prose pieces I've published in a while. It's called The Magic Palm and it's in the Bright Flash Literary Review. The picture below (not the one on the website) is what inspired it. For all you prose lovers out there, rejoice.

Starting to Be Mr. Nice Guy

Pictured: a philanthropist

Theory time. As those of you who follow my blog have probably noticed, I have been posting more. Not posting my thoughts, no, but links to poems. Now why do you suppose that is? Am I getting better? Maybe. But I think the answer is more material. Namely that we're entering into summer break for the nation's teachers, professors, and adjuncts. That means more people with more free time to respond to submissions and post what they accept. Anyway, that's my theory and here's a poem from Hidden Peaks called Starting to Be Mr. Nice Guy.

Do Something Poems from Do Nothing Kings

Roi Fainéant has published four poems of mine. They involve memory, the internet, cooking, and surveys. The title of one of them "Currying Forms," is based off the title of one of the first ever English cookbook. The name of the publication is a reference the final kings of the Merovingian Dynasty in France (the last one is pictured getting a tonsure after being deposed). They were perceived as being weak and ineffectual, so much so that even the Pope said it was fine to get rid of them.

From Philip Twite is the name of the poem. The name of the author is Ben Nardolilli. The name of the journal it is published in is the Pine Cone Review. Hence the picture above.

I'll Be at a Reading in Time Square

UPDATE: I'll be part of a reading on Sunday, May 22, 2022. It is called "Poet Voice Sucks: Funny Poetry From Writers, Comedians & Actors" and is being put together by Christine Stoddard. Several poets and performers from the tri-state (try to guess which states) area will be involved. There will be only FUNNY poems. This might be the first time I've been mentioned in Eventbrite.

Literature for the Masses

Apparently I've written it. A poem about urban development and renewal is up at Class Collective. It was inspired by my times catching the bus near the Javits Center. Good times, I mean, no, not good times. Hence the poem.

Ubu Serf

Poems Good Enough for a Missouri Baptist

A rough draft of the Piss-an Cantos that were written on toilet paper

At least that's what I am going to assume with this next post. The journal Cantos, out of Missouri Baptist University, has published two poems from me. Flip through to page 18 to find them. The second one might be the first published poem about Newkirk Avenue, my home street. Who knows. I leave to the scholars to verify such history.

By the Disappointed Housewife for publishing my work. As you can guess, the title "Pilate's Dream" is taken from the song in the Musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

Flying into the Sun, Part II

No, your eyes and minds and your minds eyes don't deceive you. I already posted about a poem I got published in the Red Ogre Review. Has the poem changed? No. Has another one been added? Again, no. Yet, there is something different this time. The medium. Now in addition to reading, you can hear me reading, while you read along too!

New Wine In New Issues of Wine Cellar Press

Happy New Year. 2022 is here. To stay? We'll see. Wine Cellar Press is out with its latest issue: Gressive. It's broken down into different categories, each one named for a different kind of wine. Under the heading for Rossi, is a poem by me. It is titled "Gernika," the Basque name for the town that served as the inspiration for Picasso's Guernica.
